Love Your Club: Nicky Devlin – Ayr United
Nicky Devlin was a mainstay in the Ayr United side that fought bravely against relegation last season, making 36 appearances.
The 21-year-old has since been handed the captain’s armband in only his second season at Somerset Park. We caught up with him to find out what the club means to him.
Why do you love Ayr United?
This is only my second year at the club but the fans, the playing staff and backroom team were fantastic last season. I am enjoying playing my football again, and it’s been brilliant here.
What’s the vibe like in the dressing room before a game, especially at home?
It’s good because being involved in one of the lower league, part-time teams we especially get the better crowds when we are at home. There’s always a bit of nervousness in the dressing room with the pressure to perform in front of the big crowds at home. You’re nervous but your excited as well, you just want to get out there and start the game.
Describe the fans and what they mean to the club
We’ve got a lot of fans that turn up and support us, especially at home. I know for the away games there’s always at least one bus full of supporters that runs to every away game throughout the season. It’s something the players appreciate as well. There’s nothing better than when you go away from home and you can see a big group of fans that have come to support you. It sometimes helps you get results that you are maybe not expected to get. It’s a good set of supporters here, both home and away.
Can you name an Ayr United Backroom Hero?
Lynne and her staff always make sure that after every training session and every game there’s always food there for us. The boys really appreciate that there’s always something there for us to eat when we come to work.
What’s the best thing about being an Ayr United footballer?
I don’t think you get the feeling in many jobs that you get when you are winning games. You train all week and if you don’t get the rewards on the Saturday you kind of feel that you have wasted your week, but you can’t beat that feeling when you win.
