Premier League Countdown: Can Watford score 50 or more goals?

| 20.07.2015

Pre-season is now well underway and fans all around the world are counting down to the start of the new Premier League campaign.

And it seems bookies are getting a little over-excited too with Ladbrokes offering a number of specials before the action kicks-off on August 8.

The subject of today’s enhancement is newly-promoted Watford with odds of 19/1 (19 days to go!) offered for the Hornets to score 50 or more goals during their first top-flight season in eight years.

Now we know what you’re going to say.

The Hertfordshire club’s previous Premier League exploits hardly set the world alight with two bottom-place finishes and a highest-goals total of 35 strikes on their rap sheet.

But before we get all sniffy about Quique Sanchez Flores’ men reaching or even surpassing the target set in 2015-16 let’s look at a few more stats first.

Since their relegation in 2007, Watford have been reasonably prolific, none more so than when hammering in 91 goals en-route to automatic promotion from the Championship last season.

They managed 74 goals in the season before that when finishing 13th, 85 in the season they were beaten in the play-off final and haven’t dipped under the 50 mark since, you guessed it, they were last relegated.

Point to prove: Matej Vydra will be eager to silence his Premier League doubters

This is a different type of team to the ones assembled by Graham Taylor in the late nineties and then the uber-functional Aidy Boothroyd.

Leading marksmen Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo each bagged at least 20 goals last season while Matej Vydra will be desperate to prove himself at the highest level following a disappointing spell at West Brom.

If you believe in Watford, get on the latest Premier League Countdown Special and keep your eyes peeled for a new enhancement each day between now and the big kick-off!
