Sunderland boss hoping to get one over Newcastle early doors

| 02.07.2015

Sunderland and Newcastle have both been linked to Chelsea’s Marco van Ginkel this summer, but it’s the influence of manager Dick Advocaat that could be decisive in the Black Cats stealing a march on the Magpies.

The Wearside club are confident they can grab the versatile central midfielder on loan from Stamford Bridge this summer, thanks to Advocaat’s Dutch roots.

Van Ginkel arrived at Chelsea as a much-touted 19-year-old, having made 93 senior appearances for Vitesse Arnhem, the Blues’ recognised feeder club in Holland.

Although Advocaat hasn’t directly managed the now 22-year-old, recent stints at PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar coincided with Van Winkel’s rapid rise in the Eredivisie.

Unfortunately for Van Ginkel’s Chelsea career, the reams of world-class talent available to Jose Mourinho have ensured the midfielder has been restricted to just a pair of senior appearances since his 2013 transfer.

This led to a season-long loan deal being arranged with AC Milan last term, where the two-capped centre-mid enjoyed more first-team opportunities.

However, it’s Van Ginkel’s documented desires to make an impression in the Premier League which look to have acted as the chief catalyst in this proposed loan move to the Stadium of Light.

Newcastle and newly-appointed manager Steve McClaren were thought to be very keen on improving their current midfield options with Van Ginkel’s signature too, but won’t give up on another Chelsea target.

The Championship player of the season at north-east rivals Middlesbrough last season, Patrick Bamford’s future is still hanging in the balance and with Radamel Falcao’s arrival in west London, another loan deal may suit all concerned.
