Swansea eyeing up free transfer of Argentine defender Munoz

Swansea have entered the race to sign former Palermo defender Ezequiel Munoz according to reports in the Italian press.
The Argentine’s contract at the Sicilian club expired on Tuesday, and it appears the 24-year-old is yet to decide where his future lies with a whole host of sides reportedly interested.
A move to AC Milan looked on the cards in January, but a switch to i Rossioneri never materialised with a loan stint at Sampdoria the chosen alternative.
But his participation at the Genoa-based club was sorely limited with injuries leaving the Boca Juniors academy graduate with just four appearances for Walter Zenga’s team during his spell at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Returning to the club or finally realising his move to the San Siro are options, but interest from Dinamo Moscow and Swansea looks the most credible and likely route for the player, according to Tutto Mercato Web.
The Swans are currently a defender short after the exit of Jazz Richards as he moved to Championship side Fulham.
While the Welshman wasn’t a regular feature at the Liberty Stadium, extra bodies are certainly needed in Garry Monk’s backline.
They are well stocked in the full-back position but now have just Ashley Williams, Federico Fernandez and Jordi Almat as their sole senior centre backs.
A free transfer for Munoz would certainly add both quantity and quality to the Glamorgan side’s defensive capabilities without breaking the bank.
He very nearly became a full international for Argentina back in 2009, so the promise has been there thoughout his career.
Having been called up to Diego Maradona’s squad for a friendly against Panama, Munoz went on to suffer a cruciate ligament injury in the build up and end his Albiceleste career, for now at least.
He was somewhat of a lucky charm for both Palermo and Sampdoria in the 2014-15 season, just Fiorentina and Juventus coming out on top in the 17 matches that he was handed a starting berth.
Should a move to the Premier League come to fruition it could be that Monk thrusts Munoz straight into the starting line up for their match of the season against Chelsea for which they are unsurprisingly a 10/1 shot for victory.
