How Twitter reacted to England Women’s World Cup bronze medal
Published:There couldn’t have been a better way to sum up England Women’s surprising run in the World Cup than their final match of the tournament against Germany in the third-place playoff.
Against the odds, Mark Sampson’s side overcame their rivals in extra-time, capping a heart-warming run in a tournament where few expected the side to get beyond the first knockout round.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the result:
How tough a task the Lionesses faced was made clear prior to kick off.
#GER–#ENG in the Women's World Cup third-place match at 4 ET.
Germany has never lost in 20 games vs England (18-0-2).

0 – England haven't scored against Germany in two WWC matches (0-3 loss in 1995, 0-0 draw in 2007). Blanks.

After 107 minutes of goalless action, Fara Williams finally broke the deadlock with a 108th minute penalty.
Fara Williams is 2nd player to score 3 penalties at a single WWC (Norway's Tina Svensson in 1991).

After agonising own-goal that cost them their place in the World Cup final, the England side responded perfectly.
The @england Women's team showed just how to bounce back from heartbreak. Well done ladies!

England women beat Germany for 3rd place in WWC. Frankly unlucky not to be in final.

And, after a thoroughly successful tournament, attention can now turn to winning the European Championships
Congrats #ENG on beating #GER to 3rd place in #WWC2015. #Lionesses are officially the best team in Europe at the #FIFAWWC. Should be proud.
