Axe swings at Spurs again, as costly flop attracts Inter attention

Published:

There really is no hiding place for new signings at Tottenham. Unless you arrive and impress rather rapidly, chances are you’ll be sold for a slight loss to a team somewhere further down the footballing pecking order.

Since Mauricio Pochettino has arrived to marshal the north Londoners’ touchline, five of the infamous seven recruits bought with the Gareth Bale ransom have departed the scene, as have two of his own signings.

Amid the constant departures at White Hart Lane, one man, perhaps the player with the biggest case for sale, remains a Lilywhite. At least for now anyway.

Erik Lamela, the club’s record signing that has played like a non-league trialist since a 2013/14-switch from Roma, has long been linked with a return to Serie A.

Such an escape looked unlikely while Spurs had little backup to Harry Kane in the striking department, with Pochettino using Lamela as his substitute striker thus far.

However, after the arrival of Lyon’s Clinton N’Jie and a continued pursuit of Saido Berahino only likely to end with the West Brom man signing on, Lamela looks as though he could be set free.

Inter Milan are rumoured to be in talks with Spurs over a proposed move, after cutting short their plans to sign Wolfsburg’s Croatian winger Ivan Perisic.

With Sky Sports suggesting those talks are advancing at a considerable rate, it could be that the young Argentine forward is back in Italy before too long.

Pochettino is still waiting for his first win of the season after following the opening-day defeat to Manchester United with a pair of draws.

Everton are his next assignment in the Premier League, with the Toffees visiting White Hart Lane in Saturday’s evening fixture.

Ladbrokes make the hosts 9/10 to get a victory, with the draw 5/2 and the Merseysiders 3/1.
