Dunfermline now odds-on to top League 1 at the end of the season

Published:

Very rarely will one single fixture force such a swing in the outright market just two weeks into the season as much as Dunfermline’s comprehensive win over Cowdenbeath did.

Prior to the match, Pars winger Joe Cardle joked about how anything other than a 7-1 home victory would be a disappointment for the club’s fans after they had won 4-1, 5-1 and 6-1 in their previous three fixtures.

As it was, there was no need for the East End Park fans to be disappointed though, as the rampant hosts quickly put the Blue Brazil to bed.

Many had Dunfermline as favourites to return to the second tier of Scottish football at the start of the season, including the bookies, Ladbrokes having them priced up as 11/4 jollies before the big kick-off.

After an easy victory first time out against Brechin City, they were clipped into 5/4, but that was nothing compared to what was about to come.

Their septet of goals against Cowden saw a flurry of big bets come in on Allan Johnston’s side, forcing the bookies to dodge the unrelenting fire by cutting them into 8/13 to top Ladbrokes League 1 come May.

While the future looks bright for Dunfermline, their opponents have now suffered defeat on both starts since dropping down from the Championship over the summer.

Prior to the start of the season, they were next in the betting to take the title, but are now long-shots at 20/1.

Instead they have seen their odds to finish bottom cut drastically from 25/1 at the start of the season into 6/1.

There is a long way to go, but fans of the Fife outfit certainly won’t want to see any more shortening of their odds for the drop in the coming weeks.
