US Open: Three double-figure Men’s Singles dabbles to follow

Published:

The build-up to the final Grand Slam of the tennis year has begun in earnest, with the first round of the Montreal Masters due to get underway later today.

Flushing Meadows will host the US Open 2015 three weeks to the day, with Novak Djokovic 6/5 favourite to win his third Slam of the year, but only his second in Queens.

Andy Murray is 4/1 second favourite, with five-time winner Roger Federer the only other protagonist laid at single-figures ahead of the tournament.

Yet, if there was ever one of the big-four tournaments to look beyond the established elite it’s this one, with three first-time Slam-winners taking the laurels in the last six editions.

With this in mind read on for the rationale behind news.ladbrokes.com’s three double-figure dabbles to follow…

Stanislas Wawrinka to win the US Open @ 12/1

The only man to defy Djokovic in Grand Slam combat this term, the French Open boss is starting to show the kind of consistency that suggests winning this is realistic.

Including when winning the Australian Open at the beginning of 2014, he has made at least the quarter finals of six of his last seven such competitions.

Most impressively his last four hard-court Slam clashes with Djokovic have all gone five sets, suggesting he can win this competition the hard way if necessary.

Kei Nishikori to win the US Open @ 16/1

Currently ranked number four in the world, last year’s beaten finalist can expect a reasonably kindly draw at the end of the month.

He arguably paid the price for earlier exertions 12 months ago when going down in straight sets to Marin Cilic, having beaten first Milos Raonic, then Stan Wawrinka in five sets, before booking his place in the final with a four-set win over Djokovic.

For evidence that he’s mustard for this year’s renewal look no further than his recent tarmac triumph in Washington, where he took down Cilic on his way to glory.

David Ferrer to win the US Open @ 100/1

The Spanish player-turned-builder-turned-player is definitively a second-tier operator, but then so is Tomas Berdych, 60 points shorter in the betting.

Ferrer is enjoying statistically the best hard-court campaign of his career too, with the only defeats in his 17/3 campaign coming to Nishikori, Bernard Tomic and Djokovic, while he has also claimed tournament wins in Doha and Acapulco.
