Remember when Malmo reached the European Cup final?

| 19.08.2015

There is a hint of nostalgia for people brought up on a diet of 1970’s football, when they hear the name of Celtic’s Champions League opponents.

Malmo’s finest hour came in the 1978-79 season, when against the odds they reached the European Cup Final.

There they faced a Nottingham Forest side led by the legendary Brian Clough.

Despite narrowly losing out 1-0 in Munich, they remain the only Scandinavian club to make it to the final of Europe’s premier competition.

In fact, the Sky Blues are the most successful club in the history of Swedish football, with 18 league titles to their name and fourteen domestic cups to boot.

Their manager Aga Hareide came out of managerial retirement to take the reigns in early 2014.

Since then the club have gone from strength to strength.

They picked up last season’s Allsvenskan title and enjoyed an excellent run in the Champions league.

After seeing of Salzburg over two legs at this same stage, they qualified for the group stages.

They looked a little out of their depth in a group containing Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Olympiakos, but the experience of six games at this level will be invaluable, along with the financial windfall.

The club have a number of British connections. They have been managed by two Englishmen – Bob Houghton was at the helm during much of their success in the 70s and Roy Hodgson led them to five successive league championships in the following decade.

Their current squad also has a few familiar faces in there.

Club captain Marcus Rosenberg is back enjoying his second spell at the club.

He has scored goals all over the continent, including with Ajax and Werder Bremen, but he will not be fondly remembered by Baggies fans after he failed to score in 28 games for the West Midlands club.

Kari Arnason enjoyed spells north and south of the border, with Aberdeen, Plymouth and Rotherham before making the return to the country of his birth.

And Jo Inge Berget will be no stranger to the hosts following a brief loan spell at Celtic Park last season. The Norwegian also played under Celtic manager Ronny Delia at Molde.
