Sunderland likely to benefit from Liverpool striker’s stubbornness

| 14.08.2015

Despite finding himself in the first-team wilderness at Liverpool, Fabio Borini appears disinterested in a move back to his native Italy this summer, alerting Sunderland to the prospect of re-signing the striker.

The Reds’ £11m signing from Roma has never cemented a place at Anfield, but a season-long loan on Wearside proved a far more fulfilling experience for the forward.

Over the 2013/14 campaign Borini netted 10 times in 40 appearances, including seven goals in the Premier League and the opener in a 3-1 Capital One Cup final defeat to Manchester City.

Having subsequently refused a permanent £14m switch to the Stadium of Light however, the Black Cats had cooled their interest in the striker until now.

With Connor Wickham securing a move to Crystal Palace and winger Adam Johnson sidelined for two months through injury, Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat is suddenly left a little short of potential goalscorers.

Having suffered an ominous 4-2 defeat at Leicester on the opening day of the Premier League season, fans of the Black Cats will be hoping some more decisive action in the transfer market is forthcoming.

Re-signing Borini, even on loan, would probably be a very welcome move on Wearside in the circumstances, despite the Italian’s snub 12 months ago.

Proven sources of goals are a precious commodity at any club and although Borini hasn’t cut the mustard in the highly-competitive surroundings at Liverpool, he certainly flourished at Sunderland given far greater exposure.

Although it’s extremely early days in the new season, a 7/5-rated home victory against freshly-promoted Norwich would be a vital result to repair some bashed confidence for Advocaat’s men.
