Celtic’s free-scoring Leigh Griffiths named Player of the Month

Published:

Five goals in his first six Ladbrokes Premiership appearances this season were enough to see Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths named as the Player of the Month for August.

The 25-year-old bagged the opener against Ross County, Kilmarnock and Dundee United as the Bhoys won five of their opening sextet of matches.

During that period Griffiths earned himself a call up to the Scotland squad for the Euro 2016 qualifying matches against Georgia and Germany.

The focal point of the Hoops attack, the former Hibernian striker will be relied upon to help the defending champs wrestle top spot back from Aberdeen who caused Ronny Deila’s men to leave Pittodrie empty handed on Saturday.

The Glasgow side will be hoping their star man can continue his strong goal-scoring form into Europe this week when they make the trip to Ajax.

Griffiths is 13/2 to open the scoring at the Amsterdam Arena, and having netted a trio of times in the ultimately unsuccessful Champions League qualifying competition could be a spot of value.

Repeat the form of August and one suspects that this won’t be the last Player of the Month accolade he picks up this season at Parkhead.
