Ferrari a good bet to eclipse history-making Mercedes in Monza

Mercedes are on the verge of making history after Lewis Hamilton captured the German Formula One giants’ 23rd successive pole in Italian Grand Prix qualifying, leaving them one behind Williams’ 1992/93 record.
Hamilton could go down in the annals himself with a ninth pole in a row at the Singapore GP later this month, which would see him tied with Ayrton Senna on the all-time list, but the Brit’s recent win ratio suggests he’s no sure thing for 3/10 victory at Monza.
Granted, it is tough to take on a driver who has won over half of this season’s races so far, and six of the last seven in 2014, but Hamilton’s record round this track is in no way infallible, with just two victories from eight attempts.
Furthermore, the pattern of the 29-year-old’s season so far suggests punters would be mad to back Hamilton at such short odds, with his recent form reading L-W-L-W-L-W after victory in Belgium last time out.
The form of Ferrari pair Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel in qualifying shows what a shaky 3/10 bet this really is, with the former just over a quarter of a second behind Hamilton, and both ahead of Mercedes number two Nico Rosberg.
Raikkonen, who makes the front row of the grid for the first time in two years, is tough to get behind, even at 9/1, having never triumphed at Monza in 12 tries, but teammate Vettel must be worth a nibble at 7/1 around a track that will hold no fear.
The four-time former world champion, with two 2015 Grand Prix victories to his name already, has won this race three times in total, including twice in the past four years, so expect the German to capitalise if Hamilton fails to fire on all cylinders.
