Ladbrokes Championship: Rangers are in seventh heaven

Published:

Rangers were made to work for their seventh consecutive league win, against a stubborn Dumbarton side.  The Govan men were far from their best as they huffed and puffed to a scrappy 2-1 victory over the Sons.

The free scoring Martyn Waghorn continued his fine start to the season. The English striker notched his seventh and eighth league goals to stretch his lead atop the goal scoring charts.

The Gers have a midweek date with St Johnstone to look forward to in the League Cup. Judging by this performance, they will need to up their level to knock out the Premiership outfit, in what promises to be one of the first big tests of how much Warburton has really improved his side.

Hibs remain the best placed side to challenge the dominance of the Glasgow outfit. Alan Stubbs’ men made it four wins in-a-row and for a team that historically has an unstable defence, an impressive fourth successive clean sheet.

A stunning strike from a free-kick from the influential Liam Henderson was enough to give them a 1-0 away win at Livingston.

The Hibees were forced to withstand an onslaught from the home side in the latter stages. Visiting keeper Mark Oxley made a number of crucial saves, and when he was beaten two last gasp clearances from Paul Hanlon and Lewis Stevenson meant the points were heading back to Leith.

Second placed Falkirk looked to be heading to another impressive win, until they suffered last minute heartbreak against 10-man Alloa. John Baird’s penalty had put the Bairns in the lead, but the Wasps snatched their first home point of the season with a 90th minute equaliser courtesty of defender Colin Hamilton.

There was further dismay for Buddies fans as St Mirren went down to another home defeat, this time at the hands of Raith Rovers on Friday night. It has been a dismal start to the season for the side who were relegated from the Premiership, and leaves Ian Murray’s side still hunting their first home league win.

The game looked to be heading for a draw, after Lawrence Shankland cancelled out James Craigen early Raith opener. However, with time running out Grant Anderson fired home Jon Daly’s knock down to give the Kirkcaldy side their first away win, as they moved up to third place in the league table.

Finally, there was a share of the points as Queen of the South fought back to rescue a 2-2 draw with Morton.

The Doonhamers were on top for much of this exciting and open encounter, but it required a late own goal from the unfortunate Luca Gasparotto to restore them to parity. The result leaves both sides on an identical ten points, and firmly settled in mid-table.
