Ladbrokes League 2: Montrose blasted away by East Fife

Published:

Another week goes by in Ladbrokes League 2 and we have another new name occupying top spot thanks to East Fife’s pummeling of Montrose at Links Park.

The Gable Endies had won four on the spin on home turf before Gary Naysmith’s side turned up.

However, they were brought back down to earth as the visitors recorded an impressive 4-1 victory.

Gary Fraser had put the hosts in front before Nathan Austin bagged two goals either side of half-time and Montrose’s task was then made doubly difficult following Greg Pascazio’s sending-off.

Scott Mercer smashed one in just before the hour mark and Austin then completed his hat-trick with 12 minutes remaining.

Arbroath also caught the eye with a 4-0 demolition away at bottom dwellers, East Stirling.

The Red Lichties have now won three-in-a-row and it was a brace from Andy Ryan as well as goals from Robert Linn and Martin Grehan that did the damage against their 10-man hosts.

Meanwhile, Queen’s Park were the other weekend winners with their 2-1 victory over Stirling Albion putting them level on 15 points with East Fife.

Gus MacPherson’s side went ahead through John Carter’s effort on 23 minutes before Steven Doris put Albion immediately level.

Anthony Ralston secured the points in the second-half, netting from six yards out to secure a fifth win in his team’s last seven outings.

And finally, the spoils were shared in the two other fixtures with Blair Henderson rescuing a point for Berwick Rangers at Clyde after Sean Higgins had given Barry Ferguson’s side a first-half lead.

In more dramatic fashion, Elgin City snatched a last-minute equaliser courtesy of Craig Gunn’s headed effort to leave Annan Athletic crestfallen.

Steven Black had handed them the lead after 40 minutes but they were made to surrender their place at the head of the table.
