Ladbrokes League 2: Surprise package Montrose have double inspiration

Published:

Montrose continue to defy expectations in Ladbrokes League 2 with the Angus club’s 2-0 victory over Elgin City on Saturday lifting them into third-place in the table.

The Gable Endies were a two-legged play-off away from being dumped out of the SPFL last season.

But there appears to be a newfound determination at Links Park with two men in particular leading the way.

Graham Webster and Gary Fraser notched the goals that saw off Elgin, a repeat of the pair’s double salvo against Clyde in late August.

Meanwhile, Annan Athletic were also 2-0 winners at the weekend with East Fife their victims. Goals from Josh Todd and Rabin Omar secured all three points for the table-toppers.

And there was no respite for struggling Arbroath at the bottom of the table. Chris Smith inflicted more misery upon the winless Smokies as Clyde escaped Gayfield Park with a slender 1-0 victory.

Elsewhere, Queen’s Park succumbed to a second successive defeat as Berwick Rangers ran out 1-0 winners.

Darren Lavery was the hero again, scoring his third goal in as many games, this time from the penalty spot after the visitor’s had Scott Gibson dismissed for a handball.

And finally, Stirling Albion got the better of local rivals East Stirlingshire with a hard-fought 3-2 win that ensured their first maximum points of the season.

Alex Cunningham and Steven Doris had put them 2-0 up after just seven minutes before Nathan Shepherd reduced the arrears.

Albion’s two goal cushion was restored when Ross McMillan headed in but Ally Roy’s free-kick with just a minute of normal time remaining set-up a tense finale.
