Poll: Is Wayne Rooney England’s greatest ever?

Published:

Wayne Rooney may be in the midst of a Premier League goal drought but the England captain is on the brink of reaching a milestone in his international career.

The Manchester United man currently sits second in the all-time scoring charts for England on 48 goals, one behind Bobby Charlton.

It appears to be a case of when and not if the 29-year-old breaks the record and with lowly San Marino next up for the Three Lions we could herald a new all-time top scorer before the weekend is out

But does breaking the record make Rooney the best marksman in his country’s history?

That’s what we’re asking Ladbrokes News readers to vote on today but before you make up your mind here are a few stats to help you decide.

Bobby Charlton’s 49 goals came from 106 England appearances

– Rooney has hit 48 from 105 matches

– Charlton was integral to England’s World Cup win in 1966, scoring against Mexico in the group stage and netting a brace in a 2-1. win over Portugal in the semis

– Rooney has scored just one World Cup goal, in a 2-1 defeat to Uruguay at Brazil 2014

– Charlton bagged four hat-tricks for the national side, against Switzerland, Mexico, Luxembourg and the USA

– Rooney is yet to bag a hat-trick for the Three Lions
