The Week in Golf: Zach Johnson perfectly suited to BMW charge

The BMW Championship is the PGA Tour’s penultimate tournament of the season and acts as the axe that cuts those in the hunt for FedEx Cup glory from 70 to 30.
This year, the tournament is returning to Conway Farms Golf Club in Chicago for the second time, having hosted in 2013.
That year, Zach Johnson claimed the victory from Jim Furyk, shooting a six-under-par 65 to overtake his Ryder Cup compatriot in the final round.
The course proved to be a perfect foil to the sunglass-wearing major-winner’s game, as he showed his skill in approaching the green and his poise on it.
Two years on there is little reason to swerve from the 2015 Open Championship victor to make it two from two at the BMW.
Ladbrokes offer 20/1 about Johnson claiming victory at Conway, which is well worth an investment considering his previous record at the course.
There is more in Johnson’s favour than just his 2013 exploits. The 39-year-old has enjoyed a stellar current campaign, recording seven top-10s and two top threes during the year.
While that form ensures the American has no qualification concerns for the season finale, it’s quite a different matter for our selection on the European Tour.
Alejandro Canizares lies 55th in the Race to Dubai rankings and needs to continue his return to form at the Italian Open if he wants to be among the participants in the UAE.
Thankfully, his tie for 12th at the KLM Open in Holland last week was his best finish since a solo 10th at the BMW PGA Championship some 16 weeks earlier.
That result indicates the Spaniard is making a concerted push for Race to Dubai inclusion and at 40/1 with Ladbrokes for the Italian Open, now could be the time to join him for his ride.
With a course that suits his putting prowess, Canizares is the man to follow in Milan.
