Top 5: Mata and Man United magic feature in best team goal list

Published:

Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United are giving their Premier League rivals a lesson in how to be ruthless in front of goal with all three of their shots on target contributing to a 3-2 success at Southampton yesterday.

And it was the Red Devils’ third strike in particular that got tongues wagging at St. Mary’s.

Midfield maestro Juan Mata rounded off a 45-pass move to slot the ball past Maarten Stekelenburg as United climbed to second in the table.

Here’s our celebration of that goal and four other moments of collaborative brilliance.

Juan Mata – Man United v Southampton, 2015

The Saints could only sit back and watch in awe as the visitors pulled them around the pitch and before adding the killer touch.

Mata converted the rebound after Memphis Depay’s shot had ricocheted off the post but it’s the build-up that will long be remembered.

David Silva – Spain v Scotland, 2011

As the kings of tiki-taka it’s perhaps no surprise to see the Spanish national team get a mention.

This effort came in a Euro 2012 qualifier with Manchester City gem Silva getting on the end of a mere 41-pass masterclass.

Jack Wilshere – Arsenal v Norwich, 2013

The Gunners are another team famed for their easy-on-the-eye style and when it comes off they’re capable of producing magic like this.

Wilshere’s deft first-time finish against Norwich was the icing on the cake as the Canaries found themselves completely bamboozled by their opponents.

Paul Scholes – Man United v Panathinaikos, 2000

This one often gets pulled out from the annals when the subject of greatest team goals rears its majestic head.

The Greek side couldn’t get near United at Old Trafford back in the year 2000 as Scholes et al tore them apart. The Ginger Wizard’s finish further highlights his brilliance.

Esteban Cambiasso – Argentina v Serbia and Montenegro, 2006

Long before he became a Leicester cult icon, Argentina midfielder Cambiasso lit up the 2006 World Cup with his teammates.

La Albiceleste would go on to thump Serbia and Montenegro 6-0 with this beauty the pick of the bunch on a famous night in Gelsenkirchen.
