How Twitter reacted to Arsenal and Chelsea’s League Cup humiliation
Published:The fourth round of the Capital One Cup began with just three Football League teams, all from the Championship, remaining. By the end of the Tuesday night, there was every chance all of them would be in the next draw too.
Although Hull’s penalties victory over in-form Leicester was remarkable, it was Sheffield Wednesday’s 3-0 decimation of Arsenal that rightly took all the headlines. Middlesbrough, in action against Manchester United on Wednesday night, have all the inspiration they need to join their peers in the next round.
While Arsenal bowed out in embarrassing fashion, Chelsea ensured it was a dire night for the capital by losing on penalties to Stoke. Their exit ensures there will be a new name on the trophy this season.
After two heavy hitters were dumped out, there was a naturally exuberant reaction on Twitter. Here’s the best of it:
The Gunners left Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla in London for their trip up north. When Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott both got injured early on, it looked like a long night was ahead
The only thing positive to come out of that game was that Cech never got injured #Afc

All tonight proved is how fragile our squad is… Giroud now our only fit recognised striker. Absolutely disgrace

Without a host of star men, it was left to the Emirates’ fringe and youth players to carry the flag. It’s fair to say they didn’t do it very well
Arsene Wenger says none of the young players selected tonight are ready to play at this level. You picked ’em fella.

For the home side, and their fans, it was a superb night. Newboy Lucas Joao taking the plaudits
@YesWeCrann – I can give you 3 reasons #SWFC were better than Arsenal last night:
Ross Wallace

So Jose, how big of a chance do you have of keeping your job until the end of the season? #CFC pic.twitter.com/p87P6sNtry
