Ladbrokes League 1: Five-star Ayr sweep Cowdenbeath aside

The Ladbrokes League 1 table is starting to take on a little bit of shape and stability, after a weekend which saw the top two really pull some distance. Teams in third to eighth are now separated by just three points, while Brechin no doubt took some joy in moving off the bottom and above Cowdenbeath.
Here’s your weekly review…
Ayr will have raised a few eyebrows this weekend with a ruthless performance at home to Cowdenbeath. The hosts were ahead inside two minutes through Jordan Preston before Alan Forrest made it 2-0 twenty minutes in.
Cowden fell away in the second half and strikes from Gerry McLauchlan, Brian Gilmour and Craig Moore saw the Honest Men complete a resounding 5-0 success.
The result means the league leaders are now eight games unbeaten since the opening day and remain a point clear at the top, while Cowdenbeath now occupy bottom spot.
Dunfermline are keeping pace with Ayr thanks to a 3-0 win at home to Albion Rovers.
The Pars had to wait for the opener, but Joe Cardle eventually put them 1-0 up two minutes before half-time.
Albion offered little response in the second half and goals from Rhys McCabe and Fayssal El Bakhtaoui sealed the points for Allan Johnstone’s men.
The only other side to claim three points this weekend was Stranraer who edged Airdrieonians 1-0.
In a finely poised match, Ryan Thomson’s 83rd-minute strike was enough for the Blues to win a second successive game, while Aidrie now have a single point from the last nine available.
The final two games of the weekend both finished all square.
Peterhead and Forfar battled to a 2-2 draw in a result which extends Peterhead’s winless run to six games.
Nicky Riley put the hosts 1-0 up at Balmoor, before second half efforts from Gavin Swankie and a rare strike from Iain Campbell looked to have handed Forfar the points.
Leighton McIntosh levelled it up however, and the draw means Dick Campbell’s side have taken just five points from the last six games.
Brechin continued their revival away at Stenhousemuir as they also played out a 2-2 draw.
It could have been so much better for City, who conceded a 90th minute equaliser after scoring twice in four second half minutes.
Neverthless the point, coupled with Cowdenbeath’s loss at Ayr, lifts City off the foot of the table, while Stenny are now winless in three games.
