Ladbrokes League 1: Strikes at the death hurt Peterhead and Cowdenbeath

Late heartbreak was the talk of the town in Ladbrokes League 1 this weekend with both Peterhead and Cowdenbeath denied much needed wins.
The Blue Toon looked on course to be holding out for a share of the spoils away at Albion Rovers, were it not for John Gemmell’s 89th minute winner at Cliftonhill.
Their 1-0 loss now means Jim McInally’s side are now eight league games without a win and find themselves just two places off bottom spot.
They are however in a better position than the Blue Brazil.
Relegated from the Championship last term Cowdenbeath would have been hoping to bounce straight back up at the first time of asking, but a slow start has thoroughly dented any promotion hopes.
Two goals from Bradley Donaldson and Greg Spence looked to have sealed the three points in their fixture against Stenhousemuir, but the Warriors were not done yet.
A goal in the 87th minute from Colin McMenamin gave them hope before Lewis Small stole a point in injury time to help Brown Ferguson’s men maintain the gap to the relegation play-off spots.
Another game without a win now means Cowden are now just 6/5 to drop into the bottom tier of the SPFL.
The comebacks weren’t done their though, as goals from Andy Graham and Ross Caldwell saw Ayr United overcome a two-goal deficit away at Forfar.
Nicky Devlin saw red mid-way through the second half but it wasn’t enough to halt The Honest Men’s fightback.
The dropped points were enough to see Ayr give up top-spot in the division.
Dunfermline condemned Stranraer to their fourth defeat in five league home games this term with a 3-0 win, though one might be surprised to know that there was neither a ‘Cardle’ or ‘El Bakhtaoui’ in the goalscorers column.
Instead goals for the Pars came courtesy of Michael Moffat and Ben Richards-Everton in the first half before Mikael Antoine-Curier added a third with 72 minutes on the clock.
The victory means they are now as short as 1/4 to continue their positive start and achieve promotion at the end of the campaign.
Finally, the misery continued for Brechin City as they were condemned to a seventh league defeat of the season at the hands of Airdrieonians.
Liam Watt’s strike was all that separated the sides as the Diamonds moved up to third in the table to keep the pressure on the pair of runaway leaders.
For Brechin though, things look bleak with odds of 4/9 suggesting they are set to face the drop come May.
