Liverpool boss receives most authentic title endorsement yet

Since Jurgen Klopp’s Anfield arrival, many a football luminary has leapt onto the bandwagon, predicting that the German will soon end Liverpool’s quarter-century long wait for the Premier League title.

Given Klopp’s achievements at Borussia Dortmund this is understandable. Outsmarting the might of Bayern Munich to record successive Bundesliga titles made him one of the most coveted managers in world football, not to mention that run to the Champions League final.

Still, it has been far too easy for those associated with Liverpool and the wider football fraternity to be swept away in the tidal wave of optimism that has cascaded over Anfield, while a ball has not yet even been kicked.

Hummels speaks out

What should cut through all the eulogizing however, is word direct from the horse’s mouth. Those equine chops belong to the bedrock of Klopp’s defence during his golden Dortmund years, Mats Hummels.

Now a World Cup winner, Hummels developed into one of the finest centre-halves out there under Klopp’s stewardship and Manchester United for one, have tried in vain over the past couple of years to tear him away from his beloved Dortmund.

If anyone knows the true abilities of the Reds’ great managerial hope, then it’s Hummels.

“He has shown he doesn’t need the biggest transfer budget or the biggest name to win the biggest trophies,” said Hummels.

“He is a winner, I know him. His long term goal won’t just be to qualify for the Champions League, and settle for that.

“It will be to challenge Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal for the title, and he is absolutely capable of doing that.”

From his starting position this season in 10th, even Klopp’s most fervent ‘believers’ aren’t expecting the Reds to defy odds of 40/1 this season for Liverpool to claim the Premier League title, .

However, there is plenty of appeal in the 10/1 that Klopp delivers the big one during his tenure, at 10/1 with Ladbrokes.
