RWC: Wins for England, Scotland and Wales as Pools come to an end

This Saturday could have been so different, but England will trudge out in Manchester as the only single nation World Cup host to go out in the pools.

The Uruguay game gives Stuart Lancaster’s side the chance to get a win, but they are a long way from redemption.

To make matters worse for England fans, Wales and Australia will be able to celebrate their progression at the home of English rugby when they meet at Twickenham on Saturday afternoon.

The game itself should be a tight affair as both teams have looked strong in Pool A so far.

Elsewhere, Scotland can put an end to the Japan fairytale by beating Samoa and going through from Pool B at the Cherry Blossom’s expense.

The top of Pool A is tight, with both teams on 13 points after three wins and a bonus point, with only points difference separating Australia and Wales.

The Dragons will have a point to prove having failed to beat their opponents since 2008, losing ten times in that sequence.

Wales will take encouragement that they’ve shared victories in the two World Cup meetings between the sides, winning in 1987, and, coupled with a strong desire to end the rot,  Warren Gatland’s men will deliver on odds of 9/4 to win.

England vs Uruguay: Pool A, 20:00 Saturday, Manchester City Stadium

Uruguay have lost all their games, with losing margins of 46 against Wales, 62 versus Australia and 32 when facing Fiji.

Chris Robshaw and his teammates will want to give their supporters something to cheer about, and they can do this by outgunning everyone else.

England triumphed 111-13 in the only ever meeting between the sides, and the 35 points racked up against Fiji showed what Lancaster’s men can do when on the front foot.

Backing the hosts to win by a margin of 61-70 is priced at 11/4 and could put the hint of a smile on the face of their disillusioned fanbase.

Scotland vs Samoa: Pool B, 14:30 Saturday, St James’ Park

Scotland are certainties to add to their record of seven wins in nine games against Sunday’s opponents, meaning the Thistle will make the quarters at the expense of everyone’s favourite surprise package, Japan.

The last four meetings were settled by ten points or less meaning a wager on the Scots to achieve another win by 1-10 points is by no means a stab in the dark at 11/5.
