How Twitter reacted to Sprinter Sacre’s return to winning ways

Published:

Without a win since April 2013, the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham presented itself as the perfect opportunity for Sprinter Sacre to return to the winner’s enclosure.

The day could have been dominated by the story of Faugheen ‘the Machine’ being shocked in the Morgiana Hurdle, with the 1/6 shot finding stablemate Nichols Canyon too good, but the return to form of the ‘Black Aeroplane’ was the real taking point.

Backed into 13/8 favouritism, all the vibes were there that the 2013 Champion Chaser was back to something like his best at home.

He didn’t disappoint, storming up the Cheltenham hill, to take victory by 14 lengths.

It’s safe to say that his performance at Prestbury Park drew plenty of plaudits on social media.

The manner of his victory was too much for some to take, with emotions running high by all accounts.

Immediate thoughts turned to the future with a clash with this year’s Arkle winner at the Festival in March a potential cracker.

But whether he has what it takes to defeat Willie Mullins’ upstart was a hotly debated topic. Some were keen to suggest the now-4/1 shot was the one to be on in the Champion Chase.

While others were apprehensive about what he had beat, and were clearly not taken with the suggestion that he would reclaim his title in four months’ time.

Whether or not he claims the big one back at Cheltenham in 2016, is irrelevant at the moment though.

For racing fans, the sight of one of the best about reminding us why he was so good is what really mattered on Sunday.
