Ladbrokes League 2: Annan maintain lead after action-packed weekend

There may not have been a full quota of fixtures In Ladbrokes League 2 at the weekend but there was no shortage of thrills as 19 goals and five red cards ensured a memorable weekend.
League leaders Annan Athletic were nowhere near the high-octane drama, though, with Stuart McColm’s 81st-minute winner breaking the deadlock and ensuring a win over Berwick Rangers.
It might not have been the best display of attacking intent over the weekend but the result means Athletic maintain their five-point lead at the peak of the table. Berwick meanwhile remain in eighth-place, just two points above the drop zone.
While Annan were struggling to find a breakthrough second place East Fife were having no such problems, smashing five past East Stirling to record a 5-3 win.
Kyle Wilkie put the hosts ahead on 11 minutes but Gary Naysmith’s side were behind at the break after goals from Ross Gilmour and David McKenna.
Jamie Insall levelled proceedings on 54 minutes before a bizarre last half hour had everyone scratching their heads.
Just a minute after restoring parity Insall was given his marching orders for a rash challenge, handing the visitors the initiative.
However, it was the hosts that took the lead, with Nathan Austin hitting the first of two goals, only for Reece Donaldson to level again at 3-3 a minute later.
Just another two minutes passed before the Fifers regained the lead, this time through Pat Slattery. Things were made easier of the hosts when Donaldson picked up a second yellow and the game was put beyond doubt with Aaron Lynas also sent off an 86 minutes, before Austin rounded of a miserable day for the guests.
Things were almost as hectic at Broadwood Stadium, where third-place Clyde saw off Elgin 4-2. Mark McLaughlin had Barry Ferguson’s men 1-0 up inside two minutes only for two Craig Gunn penalties to turn the tide.
Clyde kept pace with East Fife, however, when Scott Ferguson, David Gromley and Scott Linton combined to ensure the win.
Elsewhere, four goals and two red cards, the latter for Wallace Smith and Ricky Little respectively, meant Stirling Albion’s 3-1 win over Arbroath kept the theme alive.
