Ladbrokes League 2: Elgin fire warning to table toppers

Published:

The latest round of Ladbrokes League 2 fixtures threw up a number of intriguing developments, none more so than when first met second in the Highlands.

And it was Elgin City who got the better of that particular duel to close the gap between themselves and Annan Athletic to just three points at the top of the table.

That wasn’t the only twist though.

Here’s our round-up of the action…

As mentioned, Elgin were the team celebrating on Saturday following a 3-2 victory over Annan.

Goals from Daryl McHardy, Brian Cameron and a Craig Gunn penalty did the damage while Athletic’s efforts came via a McHardy own goal and a late Matt Flynn consolation.

Meanwhile, there was further movement in the top-half with Montrose dropping down a place to fourth following another away day shocker, this time at Clyde.

Barry Ferguson’s outfit ran out 3-1 winners courtesy of strikes from David Marsh, Michael Bolochoweckyj and Scott McLaughlin while the visitors’ reply came from league top scorer, Gary Fraser.

The Bully Wee are only fifth in the table but they’re now the second-favourites to win League 2 at odds of 11/4 having been 5/1 before their latest win.

Elsewhere, both Stirlingshire clubs have reason to cheer. East Stirling saw off Queen’s Park 2-1 at Ochilview Park while Berwick suffered defeat by the same scoreline against Stirling Albion.

David McKenna and Maxwell Wright were East Stirling’s heroes with Sean Burns’ effort not enough for Queen’s.

For Albion it was a quickfire double from David Verlaque and Steven Doris that gave them the lift they needed with Ewan McNeil’s superb free-kick for Berwick their only bright spark.

And finally, despite picking up a point at home to East Fife, Arbroath dropped to ninth-place following their 1-1 draw at Gayfield.

Jonathan Page gave the Fifers an early lead but Craig Watson equalised to ensure the game ended all-square.
