Montrose’s deadly duo continue to fire Gable Endies up the table

| 03.11.2015

On seeing that Montrose scored four goals at the weekend in their victory over Berwick Rangers it would have been no surprise at all to see who two of the goalscorers were at Links Park.

Between them Gary Fraser and Graham Webster have netted 15 goals this season, adding three more to their combined tally on Saturday.

Such has been their influence on their team, just four of the Gable Endies’ goals this term have come from other outlets.

The duo now find themselves in a cluster of four players at the head of the betting for the Ladbrokes League 2 golden boot.

Fraser leads in both the goalscoring (he’s netted eight times) and the betting as the 3/1 market-leader.

Team-mate Webster is just one goal behind him, and close up in the betting alongside Elgin’s Craig Gunn and East Fife’s Nathan Austin as a 10/3 shot.

This season has been something of a revelation for both of the Montrose players, as they fire their side up to second spot in the league.

The 30-year-old Fraser last played a season of senior football in his first spell at Montrose, yielding a return of just two goals in 26 appearances in the 2006-07 season.

In 2008 he moved into junior football and represented six different clubs before rejoining his old club over the summer.

Available to back at 66/1 to out-score his League 2 contemporaries, the former Celtic youth player has well and truly proved that he is worthy of a regular Ladbrokes SPFL starting berth.

Previous campaigns hadn’t seen huge goalscoring returns for Webster either, with the midfielder’s most prolific season previously coming in 2013-14 when he scored four times.

He’s already surpassed that in a third of the appearances, and shows no sign of slowing, seeing his odds clipped in from 4/1 after the weekend’s performance.

Those who like a first goal-scorer bet should look no further than the 22-year-old either with six of his seven strikes breaking the deadlock.

How much Paul Hegarty’s side rely on the pair remains to be seen, but while the two are fit and well, they continue to lift Montrose to the upper echelons of the table.

Having come so close to dropping out of the SPFL altogether last season, the start they have made surprised many.

There may be a long way to go, but sitting in second, five points behind leaders Alloa, Montrose could be a shrewd punt at 16/1 to take the title.

And if they do pull off that feat, there are two Gable Endies in particular that are sure to play a massive part.
