The 5 players more worthy of an England cap than Man Utd man

Roy Hodgson has done nothing to quell the criticism that players from the big clubs will get England call-ups if they have a small run of form.

Not to take anything away from Jesse Lingard, but his one goal against West Brom wouldn’t be enough to make the Three Lions’ squad if, for instance, he played for someone like Stoke City rather than Manchester United.

There are a raft of Englishmen putting in impressive performances across the country who have yet to represent their nation, with it seemingly being due to where they play their football.

Here are five players who fit the criteria:

Marc Albrighton

Jamie Vardy has been the star man at Leicester City this season, but Albrighton is also deserving of praise.

The winger has provided four assists this season, more than any other Englishman, and his turn of form last year was a huge contributing factor to the Foxes’ great escape.

Danny Drinkwater

Another forgotten man at Leicester, Drinkwater has set up three of Vardy’s 12 goals, the joint most profitable pairing in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old has played every league game for Claudio Ranieri’s men this season, becoming an integral part of their march up the table.

Scott Dann

A solid defender who has played well in the Premier League previously with Birmingham City, and is doing so again with Crystal Palace.

The consistent performer’s goal against Liverpool grabbed the headlines, but his 29 career strikes show this was a common occurrence for the 28-year-old.

As previously stated, Dann has done enough throughout his career to warrant selection.

Aaron Cresswell

The former Ipswich man made an immediate impression at Upton Park, being named Player of the Season in his first year with the Londoners.

After getting used to Slaven Bilic, he’s continued this form under a new manager and has provided three assists from left-back.

James Ward-Prowse

If Hodgson wanted to bring someone from the Under 21s through to the senior squad, then perhaps he should have looked to Ward-Prowse.

The Southampton man has played 34 times at youth level for the Three Lions and, as one of the few members of the U21 squad to be regularly playing first team football, seems the most deserving to making the switch to the senior side.
