Watford have no need for another Spurs reject in their squad

Having sacked their promotion-winning manager before a ball was kicked in the Premier League, signed 16 new players of little top-flight experience and scored the joint-second fewest goals through 11 games, you’d expect things to be a little more frantic at Watford.
Instead, the Hornets are sitting pretty on 16 points, nestled in mid-table and without a care in the world, except maybe for the lack of goals.
It’s that nagging concern up front which has prompted morning rumours that Quique Sanchez Flores is considering making a short-term move for Emmanuel Adebayor. However, the Spaniard would be well advised to steer clear.
Adebayor, who is without a club since being released from his contract at Tottenham, would certainly add a dose of know-how to the Vicarage Road squad, but that doesn’t guarantee success.
Despite being a veteran of 10 Premier League campaigns, the Togolese has only managed to crack the 10-goal mark in the division once in the last three.
His reputation as a wage guzzler would be a worry for a newly-promoted club of Watford’s stature, who have already spent big on players like Etienne Capoue and Valon Behrami.
The striker’s fitness would also be a question mark as the 31-year-old last played competitively when getting six minutes as a substitute against Manchester City back in May. He hasn’t been training with any clubs since his Spurs release.
So far, Watford have feasted almost exclusively on a diet of Odion Ighalo’s goals. The Nigerian has struck seven of their 10 in the league and eventually will need help from teammates.
The alternatives in Flores’ squad -Victor Ibarbo and Alessandro Diamanti – have had little chance to show they can deputise for the preferred partnership of Ighalo and Troy Deeney. The former pair have played a combined 94 minutes in the league so far.
It therefore makes little sense to shunt one of them out to accommodate Adebayor, especially with Watford’s calming league position quashing the need for change.
