Time to engrave the name Liverpool on the 2015/16 League Cup

| 03.12.2015

It’s the day after the night before Liverpool blazed a trail to the Capital One Cup semis by mauling Southampton, and those looking to back the rampant Reds for glory will be pleased by their price at Ladbrokes.

Despite dismantling the Saints 6-1 and drawing arguably the most desirable opponents left in the hat in the form of Stoke, it’s Manchester City who are the slight favourites to lift the League Cup.

City, who drew a very impressive Everton side in their semi-final tie are 23/20 chances to win the first major domestic silverware of the season.

Liverpool are behind the 2013/14 Capital One Cup champions at 6/4, which is a far more appealing price in light of drawing Stoke, especially as the first leg will be away from home.

Although the Reds only scraped past Mark Hughes’ side 1-0 at the Britannia on the opening day of the season, that victory came under deposed manager Brendan Rodgers, and those early cobwebs have been blown into the ether by the whirlwind which has been Jurgen Klopp’s arrival.

If this latest result at St Mary’s is anything to go by, then Klopp’s side may well have put the tie far beyond the Potters by the time the clubs reunite at Anfield for the second leg.

Only extra-time at Chelsea in the return leg prevented a large part of the current Liverpool squad making a Wembley appearance in the competition last season, so there is also unfinished business on the table.

If Klopp’s 1/3 favourites to qualify at Stoke’s expense do make the finale, then they have nothing much to fear from either prospective opponent.

Everton last defeated their Merseyside rivals 12 meetings ago in all competitions, while the Citizens were roundly thumped 4-1 at the Etihad in the Premier League under Klopp already this season.

The Toffees are 13/2 chances for the trophy, while Stoke bring up the rear in the market at 10s, but Anfield looks the most likely destination for the Capital One Cup.
