The next big teenage sensation in football seems to come about every couple of months and the latest one to emerge is being linked with a move to Manchester United.
Lorenzo Gonzalez is a 15-year-old Swiss striker currently on the books at Servette FC and his rapid style of play, coupled with his last name, has earned him the nickname ‘Speedy Gonzales’.
Reports stemming from the German publication Bild suggest the Red Devils sent scouts to watch the Switzerland U15 international, but United will have to compete with a host of European clubs to secure his signature.
The youngster must be careful not to follow in the footsteps of the most well known prospect to flop ever, with Freddy Adu’s career serving as a warning to adolescent prodigies.
Similarly, Martin Odegaard, the last prospect to be touted as a future star before earning a big transfer, has struggled to make an impact at Real Madrid.
However, the player nicknamed after a cartoon mouse is already beginning to look the part and scored twice for his nation as they drew 3-3 with Hungary U15s this week.
He lived up to his moniker and his pace is truly a sight to behold, with a variety of YouTube compilations illustrating that fact.
Furthermore, Gonzalez comes from good stock, with many Swiss prospects living up to their hype and showing their worth in European football.
Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka and Yann Sommer were all much hyped when they were teenagers and have gone on to be integral players in Switzerland’s national side, with Xhaka now being linked with a move to Arsenal.
The Red Devils’ fiercest competition for the 15-year-old’s signature is believed to be Real Madrid and the Servette man would be wiser to head to Old Trafford.
Bringing in the biggest and best players available has led to a policy of young players failing to break into the first team at the Bernabeu, something that is not a problem at United currently.
Anthony Martial is fast becoming a key component of Louis van Gaal’s side, with Paddy McNair, Guillermo Varela and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson also getting games this season.
