Lack of business a worrying sign for Man United and Aston Villa

The two clubs that should have signed the most players on Deadline Day according to Ladbrokes followers have been two of the quietest with neither Manchester United nor Aston Villa signing anyone in the whole of January.

The bookmaker put it to Twitter to ask which side should go out to bring in the most players before the window slams shut at 11pm this evening, and the result was pretty clear.

A total of 41 per cent of respondents said that Louis van Gaal must do all he can to bring in more players to bolster Manchester United’s push for a top four position.

The Red Devils weren’t a massive amount in front of the basement-dwelling Aston Villa who attracted 31 per cent of votes.

Remi Garde looked all but resigned to the fact that the Villans wouldn’t be bringing in any new faces on Monday, a move that for some guarantees them as one of the three sides to face the drop in the summer.

Next in the vote came the ‘Other’ selection, with Steve McClaren’s Newcastle the side with the most shouts.

With Seydou Doumbia already signing on the dotted line in the north east it could be that just one more signing delivers for those who have backed the Magpies into favouritism to be the busiest today, on what has been a quiet Deadline Day.

It looks like the Toon are set to be busiest as we head towards the climax of the season, but for the fans it’s been a window of missed opportunities for both Manchester United and Aston Villa.
