Shrewsbury backed to be final nail in Van Gaal’s coffin

League One strugglers Shrewsbury Town are being backed for a giant killing when they host Manchester United in the FA Cup later today.

United head into the game on the back of an embarrassing Europa League defeat at the hands of Denmark’s FC Midtjylland and while the Shrews are currently 21st in the third tier there have been plenty of backers at 9/1.

The raft of bets has fanned the flames somewhat in the debate about how long Louis van Gaal can hold onto his job at Old Trafford, with Ladbrokes offering odds of just 14/1 that the Red Devils are dumped out of the FA Cup and the Dutchman is sent packing before the weekend.

However, while Van Gaal could well be ousted from his role in the aftermath of any defeat the decision is likely to come too soon for the man waiting in the wings.

Jose Mourinho is the odds-on favourite to replace Van Gaal if and when he is axed but at 20/1 to take charge of the Red Devils for this weekend’s visit of Arsenal it seems the Stretford End will have to wait a little longer to get their man.

Commenting on the chances of Shrewsbury proving the final nail in Van Gaal’s coffin a Ladbrokes spokesperson said: “The dismal showing against Midtjylland in the Europa League seems to have seen what little faith United fans had in Van Gaal evaporate completely.

“The Shrews are rank outsiders to win this game but it’s clear plenty of punters are sensing an upset and the end of the Dutchman’s Old Trafford reign.”
