This week in golf: Snedeker a must but value with Walker at AT&T

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am brings together many of the PGA Tour’s brightest lights to battle it out across the tri-hosted tournament alongside the amateur ranks, in what is a unique spectacle, especially for its stunning setting on California’s Monterey Peninsula.

Befitting of the beautiful surroundings is a field jammed full of stars, led by world number one Jordan Spieth.

The two-time major winner in 2015 heads the betting at 5/1. Given his last outing produced victory at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and he’s gone T4-T7 in successive appearances at this event, surprise is in short supply.

If Spieth fails to improve on those postings in California, there is a catalogue of big-hitters, literally in the case of 10/1 shot Dustin Johnson, sure to be picking up the slack.

Bombing is never a bad thing around links courses and DJ has proven he can blend that skill with enough finesse, winning here in 2009 and 10, while posting top 10s in his last two appearances.

Amazingly, there are still others with arguably stronger claims though. Johnson has played efficiently enough on two starts this season, without hitting the heights, whereas Brandt Snedeker may best be described as dialled in.

Snedeker followed a tied third with a solo second in Hawaii, before completing the curve with victory at the Farmers just a fortnight ago.

The fact he is defending for the second time in three years here almost feels like a minor detail for the 12/1 chance, whose work around the greens here a year ago helped him break the course record.

A bet on Sneds is paramount. However, Jimmy Walker, at 16s, seems a sizzler. The winner here two years ago suffered a poor season last year by the illustrious standards he set himself in 2014.

The signs are that Walker is warming to the task once again in 2016, having opened the year T10-T13-T4.

At a favoured event this form offers backers plenty to get excited about. Meanwhile, any England cricket fans down in South Africa with a penchant for golf get the bonus of the European Tour swinging into Pretoria this week for the Tshwane Open.

Defending champion and local Pretoria boy George Coetzee is the pick of the bunch at 7/1.
