What the Spurs’ win over the Warriors means in the NBA title race

| 20.03.2016

The Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs are the two best teams in the NBA this season, by some distance.

In fact, they are two of the greatest teams in the sport’s history, but as both of them play in the Western Conference, only one of them will be able to reach the NBA Finals.

With respective records of 62-6 and 58-10, they met in Texas for a regular-season battle as eagerly anticipated as a toddlers’ first Christmas.

The match marked the first time ever an NBA game had been played by two opponents combining to sit more than 100 games above .500 in the standings.

After the Warriors had whacked San Antonio 120-90 in the first meeting, San Antonio had revenge on their mind back at home. They got it in a grinding, strategically-brilliant fashion that will make future matchups all the more mouth watering.

Stephen Curry has been a runaway freight train for the Warriors this season, but was held to just four made shots by the Spurs as the visitors recorded their lowest scoring total of the season.

The Warriors, the defending NBA champions, remain the 10/11 favourites to repeat their title-winning feat this season.

However, the Spurs’ tactical victory over them shows they may not have it all their own way in reaching the Championship round.

The Spurs are 15/4 with Ladbrokes to claim the title, while it’s 10/11 that the pair meet again in the Western Conference Finals.

If their two meetings thus far have been anything to go by, a best of seven series in the playoffs will be must-watch TV.
