Chelsea to take curious aim at former Man City striker

| 24.04.2016

The impending arrival of Antonio Conte as Chelsea’s next manager has already set tongues wagging over the future of the squad.

An unsatisfactory campaign for the Blues is almost certain to end without European football next season, giving Conte the chance to rebuild a side that was crowned Premier League champions just last term.

Who stays and who goes from the current crop at Stamford Bridge is sure to dominate the summer headlines, but it’s where the former Juventus manager takes aim in the transfer market that is more intriguing.

If reports that a former Manchester City striker is near the top of Conte’s shopping list ring true, then things could take a strange turn.

Stevan Jovetic hardly lit the Premier League up while he was at the Etihad, making just 30 top-flight appearances for the Citizens in two seasons at the club.

The Montenegrin scored eight goals in that time but was constantly battling injuries and fitness issues during his time in England.

Eventually, City decided to move Jovetic on, loaning him to Inter Milan this season with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer.

According to the Daily Star, the Nerazzurri are legally committed to paying the £12.5m required to sign the striker, but don’t actually want him beyond the current campaign.

The paper therefore believe Inter to be looking for an immediate sale of Jovetic, with Conte offered as a leading contender to take him off their hands.

While managing Juventus the former midfielder twice tried to sign the 26-year-old, but was denied the chance due to the Old Lady’s fierce rivalry with Jovetic’s then-owners Fiorentina.

Now in charge of Chelsea, there appears to be nothing stopping Conte from landing his man, although the player’s meagre record for City may not fill Blues fans with optimism.
