Louis van Gaal has had to deal with speculation over his future at Manchester United seemingly ever since Jose Mourinho left Chelsea in December.
However, he will be relieved to discover that he has a crucial ally in the form of a Red Devils legend.
Sir Alex Ferguson has come out in support of the Dutch manager and having an Old Trafford hero in his corner is sure to help turn round popular opinion amongst fans.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the 13-time Premier League winning boss said: “You have to have some patience being a Man United fan and they have shown that over the years; in Matt Busby’s time, in my time.
“For 150 years of history it is worth having a couple of years on the quiet side of success because they will always come back and come back strong.”
Van Gaal will also be spurred on by the fact that United’s run in gives them a big chance of qualifying for the Champions League, with a top-four finish priced at 15/8.
Of their remaining eight games, only the fixtures against Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur would see the Red Devils go in as underdogs, while the meeting with West Ham in May is surely going to be a tight affair as both teams battle for fourth.
Manchester City, who currently occupy the coveted fourth spot, have only won two Premier League games since the start of February, when it was announced that Pep Guardiola would be replacing Manuel Pellegrini in the summer.
Clearly overtaking City is up for grabs and the Hammers, who are level on points with United, have a similar run of games to the Red Devils, where they would be favourites for five of their eight matches.
Therefore, the meeting with Slaven Bilic’s men at Upton Park is going to have a big say in who finishes fourth and United haven’t lost there in their last six Premier League trips to the Boleyn Ground, winning four.
Thus, Champions League qualification is more than a realistic possibility and this, coupled with Ferguson’s backing, should be enough to keep Van Gaal in the dugout for the start of next season.
