Has James Rodriguez’s mum just boosted Man United’s transfer hopes?

Manchester United may have just moved a step closer to signing Real Madrid’s Colombian hotshot James Rodriguez after the player’s mother spoke out about manager Zinedine Zidane.

Rodriguez has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu of late and was on the bench again for last night’s 2-0 Champions league quarter-final defeat to Wolfsburg.

The Red Devils have been monitoring the South American’s situation in recent weeks and could be a step closer to a £60m deal after Pilar Rubio stuck the boot into Zizou.

Criticising the Los Blancos manager’s handing of her son, she said: “James should play where he feels comfortable and not cover holes.

“To criticise James and Isco by comparing him with Casemiro, they don’t understand they are very different. In the kingdom of the blind the one-eyed man is king.”

Rubio added that her son is desperate to prove himself, whether than be at Real Madrid or elsewhere.

“He has to play the same and give the same effort no matter what shirt or boots he wears,” she added.

“His transfer situation has always been handed with reservation. It is a decision that will be taken between Madrid president Florentino Perez, James and his agent.”

United appear to be heading the race to land the Colombian but must first win the race to finish in the Premier League’s top four.

The Red Devils take on Tottenham at White Hart Lane this weekend and are 3/1 to claim all three points, while Spurs can be backed at 10/11 and draw is chalked up at 12/5.
