Super League review: Sandow magic hands Warrington advantage

The unpredictable and unrelentingly exciting nature of Super League continues every week, as proven again by the latest round of results.

From Widnes’ rise to the top before Easter to the sight of Leeds and Huddersfield sitting at the bottom of the ladder, the 2016 Super League season continues to be one of the most enthralling yet, and it’s only nine (10 for four teams) rounds old.

We take a look at some of the main talking points from the latest round of Super League action…

Table-topping Wolves

Friday’s top of the table clash between Wigan and Warrington promised to be a cracker as it pitted two sides who were separated by just points difference alone at the top of Super League.

In the end, it was Warrington who moved clear at the top thanks to the magic of in-form Chris Sandow, who had a hand in each of the three tries the Wolves scored in a seven-minute burst in the first half.

They lost their irresistible half-back to injury in the first half, but held on to record their eighth win in nine games to go two points clear of Wigan at the top of the table.

Warrington head coach Tony Smith will have everything crossed that Sandow’s hamstring injury isn’t serious, as the former NRL star is already on his way to becoming a Wolves great, an honour that would be confirmed if he leads them to a debut Grand Final success in 2016.

Wakefield’s resurgence

You’d have got huge odds on Wakefield winning their last three games, especially when you consider the opposition they have faced.

But, the Wildcats have done just that – seeing off Huddersfield, Leeds and Salford in their last three outings under the guidance of new head coach Chris Chester.

Young winger Tom Johnstone is grabbing the headlines after a string of impressive solo performances, but it is very much a team effort and huge credit must go to Chester for turning the Wildcats from more or less bottom-four certainties to top-eight contenders.

Leeds and Huddersfield’s continued decline

Speaking of good odds, it would have been practically unthinkable to predict Huddersfield and Leeds would be the two sides propping up the Super League table after nine games.

It was expected that both would see vast improvement after a slow start with key players returning from injury, but that hasn’t proven to be the case and Leeds’ last two home defeats to Hull KR and Wakefield will be incredibly alarming for their head coach Brian McDermott.

The Giants sit bottom and are getting agonisingly close to returning to winning ways without holding out for victories in their last two matches.

They lost 38-34 to Castleford in a thriller on Sunday, but unlike last season’s push for a debut Grand Final appearance, it seems the Giants’ attentions this year will be focused on avoiding the bottom four before the split.
