Wigan and Warrington meet in top-of-the-table battle

The top-of-the-table battles keep coming in Super League, with tonight’s clash between Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves set to decide who will go clear at the summit of the table.

The local rivals, who have both won seven from eight this season, are separated by points difference at the top of Super League and following Widnes’ disappointing Easter, look like the two sides who will be leading the way throughout 2016.

Wigan come into the game having won both of their matches over Easter – a 24-12 win over bitter rivals St Helens was followed by a 30-16 victory over strugglers Hull KR.

Warrington, meanwhile, lost their 100% record on Easter Monday as they went down 26-24 to Hull FC after moving top with a win over Widnes on Good Friday.

The Wolves remain top of the league ahead of the Warriors on points difference, and the winner of Friday’s game will move clear at the top.

History is well in favour of Wigan, as the Cherry and Whites have won six of their last seven games against Warrington, including two victories in 2015.

Warrington (11/10) are proving a much tougher nut to crack in 2016 though, and Wigan (4/5) will have to be at the top of their game to record another two points.

Key to Warrington’s much-improved showing this season is scrum-half Chris Sandow. He has scored and created tries aplenty – with eight tries and 12 assists already – and has really found his feet this season. He has five tries in his last four games and is 12/5 to score anytime.

It was announced this week that Dan Sarginson and Josh Charnley would be leaving Wigan at the end of the season to join the NRL and rugby union respectively.

The latter seems to be getting back to his best after a stop-start 2014 and crossed for a hat-trick on Easter Monday. Charnley is 5/6 to repeat that feat in his first game since announcing his cross-code switch to Sale Sharks.
