The 115th French Open is looming ever nearer, and that means all our attention falls on the man who has thoroughly dominated this event over the past 11 years.
Rafael Nadal claimed his first title at Roland-Garros way back in 2005, and after another eight victories, is statistically the greatest French Open player of all-time.
The Spaniard’s recent struggles are well documented, but there’s plenty of reason to suggest why you simply can’t pass up the opportunity to back him this time around.
How can you not back a man who holds an astonishing French Open record of 70-2?
At the time of writing Nadal has won 13 of his last 14 clay court matches, including a Monte-Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open title double this year.
Neither Andy Murray or Roger Federer have enjoyed great seasons thus far, while tournament favourite Novak Djokovic hasn’t been impervious either.
The Serbian lost in the second round in Monte Carlo to lowly-ranked Jiri Vesely and has still never won the French Open, while in the head-to-head battle, Nadal trumps Djokovic by a pretty comprehensive 14-6.
After a first round exit in the Australian Open back in January, many had written Nadal off.
But back on the dust – easing the pressure on those knees – and with a few titles and some form under his belt, do you dare to bet against him at King of Clay’s castle?
Back in 2011, you couldn’t get any pre-tournament odds bigger than 1/3 or 3/10, so with so much suggesting he’s returning to his best, can you really pass up this year’s price of 7/2?
