Man Utd boss to join unique club if sacked after FA Cup success

| 22.05.2016

If this is to be the end of the saga, then Louis van Gaal will leave his job as Manchester United manager clutching some silverware.

The Dutchman landed the FA Cup in what is widely expected to be his last game in charge of the Old Trafford side.

Indeed, the under-scrutiny boss seemed to confirm as much when he told Sky Sports “it’s over” on Sunday morning, although there is yet to be any official announcement from the club at the time of writing.

In what has been deemed a disappointing campaign, the Red Devils slipped out of the top four and were knocked out of the Europa League by eventual silver medallists Liverpool.

They were able to claw back some pride by defeating Crystal Palace in extra time at Wembley, but it hasn’t appeared to be enough to keep Van Gaal, who has a year left on his contract, in work. Jose Mourinho is expected to be appointed his successor.

If that happens, the former Bayern Munich boss will join a unique set of managers who were fired after winning a trophy.

Vicente del Bosque is among them, having been ousted from Real Madrid just 48 hours after landing the La Liga title in 2003.

The now Spain coach had also won the Champions League the season before that, but did not have his contract renewed by president Florentino Perez. The club went through nine different in the next six years following Del Bosque’s departure.

One of those men was Fabio Capello, who sealed the La Liga title for Los Blancos on the final day of the 2006/07 season, but was sacked because the club didn’t like his style of football.

Other managers, like Jupp Heynckes and Sir Alex Ferguson retired on the back of title-winning success, but Van Gaal looks to be one of a select few who were booted out prematurely after claiming a title.
