Stay at home Wayne: Fans don’t want Rooney at Euro 2016

He may be England’s captain and record goalscorer but there should be no place for Wayne Rooney in Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad.

That is according to the Twittersphere after we asked our followers to have their say ahead of the official squad announcement on Monday.

As the man with the armband the general consensus is that Rooney will travel with the squad and likely start England’s games in his customary role as a striker.

However, not only do the largest section for our voters not want him up front, they don’t want him in France at all with 40 per cent saying watching from the sofa is where he should be.

Of those who would still take Wazza to France, most feel he should be relegated to plan B, with 27 per cent saying he should be on the bench when England face Russia in their tournament opener on June 11.

Of the remaining votes few believe Rooney should retain his position as a striker, with 26 per cent saying he should drop back into midfield for the Three Lions as he has done of late with the Red Devils.

So with just seven per cent of fans backing Rooney to do the business as the main man in England’s attack this summer there is certainly food for thought for Hodgson in the coming days.
