Germany v Northern Ireland: Die Mannschaft will prove too strong

Few would have expected that Germany would be just a point ahead of Northern Ireland before the final round of games in Group C, but while Michael O’Neill’s men performed superbly in victory over Ukraine, containing Die Mannschaft will prove just beyond them.
Germany netted 24 times in qualifying and followed that up with an imperious 4-1 defeat of Italy.
Despite their occasional – and highly-publicised – wobbles, Joachim Low’s men have come out on top in 14 of their last 19 competitive games, lifting the 2014 World Cup along the way.
Northern Ireland have been strong defensively under their inspirational boss, but lack the striking quality to break down those more robust defences.
They failed to score in either qualifying game against Romania, while Poland and Slovakia have ensured that Norn Iron have failed to find the net in two of their last three outings.
That means Germany look a relatively safe bet at 2/7 to win, with a momentous victory for the Green and White Army (14/1) and even a draw (19/4) both considered slim possibilities.
However, with the three-time European Championship winners hot-favourites for victory, there appears to be better value elsewhere for those looking to back Die Mannschaft.
They’re 11/10 to score in both halves – something Low’s charges have managed in seven of their last thirteen games, including against a trio of continental heavyweights in Poland, Italy, and England.
Many of the goals in those crucial games have come courtesy of Thomas Muller, who netted in six of Germany’s seven victories during qualifying. That means the 13/10 for Muller to score anytime and Germany to win could prove a very good bet indeed.
