Market suggests Sunderland is Hodgson’s next landing spot

Dust is beginning to settle on England’s early exit from Euro 2016. Talk has moved on from how perplexing the loss to Iceland was, and the analysis that goes with it, to future plans.
The identity of the next England manager is becoming a hot topic in the media. Gareth Southgate, Arsene Wenger and Sam Allardyce are in the frame. Even calls for Jurgen Klinsmann taking over are gaining traction.
In looking forwards though, there has been little mention of Roy Hodgson. Perhaps understandably, the outgoing England manager has become a footnote on the national team’s history. It has happened almost instantaneously. But if he is to rebuild his reputation as a manager, where can he do it?
We have priced up a list of potential next gigs for the former Fulham, Liverpool and West Brom boss, with Sunderland coming out on top at a price of 6/1.
There are two workable theories to support the Black Cats’ position as market leaders. The first appears rather obvious, with current incumbent Allardyce among the leading fancies to succeed Hodgson with the national team.
However, there is a growing trend at the Stadium of Light where the north-east club, amid a relegation struggle, sack their manager at some point during the season.
If that continues to be the case then Roy, who has guided both the Cottagers and Baggies away from top-flight danger in the past, could be in line for a return to the dugout.
After Sunderland, Hull and Bournemouth share a price of 7/1. Their managers, Steve Bruce and Eddie Howe respectively, are also being spoken about as potential England candidates.
A return to the Hawthorns comes next in the betting at 8s, with recently relegated Norwich sat between the midlands club and another one of Hodgson’s former posts, Fulham, who are a 10/1 shot.
Among the more longer-priced options, Arsenal are a 20/1 shout, while a third foray into international management looks most likely with the UAE at 25s.
