Who is… Leicester’s new goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler?

| 03.06.2016

Leicester City have made their first significant move of the summer, with the Premier League champions bringing in Ron-Robert Zieler from Hannover.

The Foxes have snapped up the stopper after exercising the German’s reported £3m release clause, and the 27-year-old brings a healthy dose of competition for Kasper Schmeichel.

With a Champions League campaign to deal with too next term, Zieler’s arrival brings some breathing space for Claudio Ranieri in the goalkeeping department.

Zieler spent two years in the Manchester United youth team, before leaving in 2010 without making a senior appearance.

Moving to Hannover that summer, the 6ft 2in stopper impressed for the club’s second team, and Zieler made his full Bundesliga debut in January 2011.

Quickly ousting Florian Fromlowitz as Die Roten’s number one, Zieler missed just two games in the remaining 2011-12 fixtures, but has been an ever-present for the club in every campaign since.

The stopper hasn’t missed a league game for over five years, so how will he handle having to battle for Leicester’s number one spot?

Zieler’s club form for Hannover was quickly rewarded on the international scene too, and he arrives at the King Power Stadium with six caps to his name.

He was a part of the 2012 European Championships and the victorious 2014 World Cup squads, behind the marauding Manuel Neuer.

Schmeichel hasn’t missed a game for the Foxes since they began their incredible turnaround in the spring of 2015, but the signing of the talented Zieler is a shrewd move from Ranieri to keep him on his toes.
