Alonso on track to extending his British GP run to six years

Before the Canadian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso was doing a good job at putting himself in position to finish among the points in the current F1 season.

In a three-race stint, the Spaniard had taken sixth in Russia and fifth in Monaco, retiring in his home Grand Prix in between when on the brink of the point-scoring positions because of a power fault with his engine.

Since Canada, McLaren’s Honda engines have been fitted with a new turbocharger, which may have boosted their efficiency, but ultimately cut power.

Alonso has not finished in the points in the three races since, although teammate Jenson Button did cross the line in sixth in Austria last time.

The good news for both McLaren drivers ahead of the British Grand Prix was that another engine upgrade was introduced, which not only maintained efficiency, but returned power to its pre-Canada levels.

Alonso took full advantage during qualifying at Silverstone, making it to Q3 for the fourth time this season. This is something he failed to manage once during the difficulties of 2015.

He will start from ninth because of a grid penalty handed to Sebastian Vettel and although the McLaren is still lacking some straight-line speed, the long corners at the track should provide some compensation.

What this means is that Alonso must stand a great chance of keeping up a lengthy record of finishing among the points at the British Grand Prix.

This is something he has achieved in each of the last five years and it is 4/6 that Alonso registers another top-10 finish in 2016.

The McLaren man gave his own confidence boost to the suggested bet after qualifying when stating “I think we’re in a position where we could score points tomorrow”.
