Becks for England? The most patriotic #WhatAreTheOdds request yet

England’s Euro 2016 may not have gone to plan but it’s onward and upwards if one punter’s recent request is anything to go by and the future is looking very bright indeed for the Three Lions.

Although England legend David Beckham hasn’t expressed an interest in managing his country any time soon, he has refused to rule out such an idea in the future.

And while we’re offering 100/1 on him becoming the next permanent manager, at your request we’ve made it 66/1 for Golden Balls to lead England to World Cup glory at some point in his potential managerial career.

Currently joint-second with Wayne Rooney in the most England appearances charts, Becks scored 17 goals in 115 games from midfield, most notably his free kick against Greece to take England to the 2002 World Cup.

And while such an employment may seem unlikely to some, it’s not uncommon for ex-players to manage the national side.

In fact, the history books show that ex-England players who go on to become managers actually do pretty well. Terry Venables led Alan Shearer and co. to a semi-final in Euro 96, while Sir Bobby Robson came closest to emulating Alf Ramsey’s 1966 World Cup success, leading England to a fourth place finish. All three represented their country at some stage of their careers.

However, recently England have adopted a different approach in terms of hiring their managers, with emphasis being placed on successful club bosses or foreign coaches.

But given that England have only won two knockout games since ’96, perhaps an ex-player in charge is the way forward.

England are 20/1 to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and with the manager’s position currently vacant, that 66/1 special on Beckham to win a World Cup as England manager could come in sooner than you think.
