Get on Wales to be SPOTY Team of the Year before it’s too late

It hasn’t been won by a football team since Liverpool’s famous treble in 2001. But this year’s BBC Sport’s Personality of the Year Team of the Year award looks set to return to the beautiful game, with Leicester City huge favourites to claim the coveted prize.

But there’s one team we shouldn’t rule out just yet. Right now they’re priced at 4/1, but that could drastically change over the next few days as they’re potentially 180 minutes away from making history.

OK, so they weren’t 5000/1 shots at the start of the tournament, but there would have certainly been one or two eyebrows raised if you’d have walked into a Ladbrokes shop and backed Chris Coleman’s Wales to win Euro 2016 at 80/1 before a ball was kicked (in fact, odds were as long as 500/1 during qualification).

Having produced possibly the greatest performance of any Welsh football side of all time on Friday night against a Belgian team ranked 24 places higher than them in the official FIFA rankings, there is a growing feeling that this team, led by Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, can go all the way.

And if they do just that, one thing is for sure: that 4/1 will seem like a steal for punters.

With Gareth Bale’s price shortening with every game for the individual award of Sports Personality of the Year (currently 4/1), the squad as a whole can’t go unnoticed.

So how do you compare two sides that have epitomised teamwork and exploited their underdog status over the past year?

The sensible answer is to look for the value, and with Leicester City priced up at just 1/5 to be crowned Team of the Year, perhaps value for money lies with The Dragons instead..

One thing’s for sure; Leicester City and Wales midfielder Andy King can start to make room in his trophy cabinet for at least one more accolade…
