Watch: Scottish Football Gold – Jutkiewicz finishes comeback
When two teams who are neck and neck in the league battling it out for a final European place come up against each other with two games to go, it’s understandable to expect a tense affair, and usually you’d be right to bet on a low-scoring game.
But that’s not what happened when Motherwell and Hibernian met in the 2009-10 Scottish Premiership. In fact, scenes from Fir Park couldn’t have been further from what we expected.
In a match that saw 30 fouls, one penalty miss, three players grab a brace each and one striker net a hat-trick, the match went down in Scottish Premiership history as the highest goal-scoring game of all time – a record which both teams still hold – eventually finishing 6-6.
Going into the game, both Well and the Hibees had form fit for relegation as it seemed neither side wanted to claim the final Europa League spot, with Motherwell picking up the only win in the last 12 combined league outings.
But it was Craig Brown’s men who were 4-2 down at the interval thanks to a first half hat-trick by Hibs striker Colin Nish.
And the second half looked to bring even more misery to the home side as Hibs grabbed another two goals.
Remarkably, though, John Sutton and co. grabbed three goals in nine minutes, leaving Motherwell just one goal short of Scottish football’s greatest ever comeback with 14 minutes of normal time remaining.
After a late penalty miss from Motherwell’s Ross Forbes, Hibs were holding on to a 6-5 lead deep into injury time until a long ball was lumped forward in the direction of Lukas Jutkiewicz.
What he did next was simply stunning…
While Hibs eventually grabbed fourth spot on the final day of the season, Motherwell’s campaign ended on an equal high as they were granted a place in the following season’s Europa League alongside the Leith club through FIFA’s Fair Play award.
